The Vital Role of a Geriatric Care Manager in the Emergency Room

Navigating an emergency room (ER) visit can be a daunting experience for anyone, but it becomes even more challenging for individuals with dementia.  Recently, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the immense value of having a Geriatric Care Manager in such a critical situation, and I’d like to share why having an advocate in the ER is so crucial.

 

The ER is a high-stress environment.  Patients arrive amidst a whirlwind of activity, often in pain, distress, or both.  The atmosphere is characterized by bright lights, incessant beeps, and a constant hum of medical staff rushing to attend to urgent needs.  For a person struggling with dementia, this chaotic environment can be overwhelmingly frightening and confusing.

 

Imagine the additional strain on someone with cognitive impairments who may struggle to answer simple questions like, “What’s your name?” or “What’s your date of birth?”  For these individuals, such questions can be nearly impossible to answer, not out of reluctance, but due to the nature of their condition.  They may also be unable to provide critical information about their medications or allergies.

 

This is where the role of a Geriatric Care Manager becomes indispensable.  As someone who specializes in managing the care of older adults, I provide essential support during ER visits.  My presence helps bridge the gap between the medical staff and the patient, ensuring that the individual’s needs and preferences are communicated effectively.

 

During a recent ER visit with a client, I spent hours advocating on their behalf, working to mitigate the confusion and stress inherent in the ER environment.  My role included calming the patient and helping them navigate the flurry of medical procedures and questions. For instance, I assisted in managing their response to various medical devices and helped redirect their attempts to disconnect from necessary equipment.

 

The presence of a Geriatric Care Manager in the ER not only provides a calming influence but also ensures that the patient’s medical and personal needs are adequately addressed.  It offers peace of mind that their care is being managed with compassion and expertise, even in the most challenging circumstances.
